In the weaker counties of the GAA the struggle for success is an uphill one. There can be so many things against them in their strivings for glory. Tradition can be against them, internal difficulties can hamper their progress and even politics can play the part of the villain.

But in Wicklow they have a different enemy and it was revealed in all its glory at last Saturdays final Division four league clash with Sligo in Aughrim where Wicklow went down fighting by a point. And it’s not tradition or politics, no, it’s the sun.

With minutes remaining in the tight clash the scoreboard at the town end malfunctioned because of the direct sunlight beaming down on the screen. It became stuck on Sligo 0-11 to Wicklow’s 0-9. But Wicklow had popped over a late point to bring them to within a single score of the Yeats men.

The only problem was that some of the players were unaware of the late point and were trusting the scoreboard which still had them two points behind. So when Wicklow’s corner forward Dean Odlum rounded his man and bore down on goal with seconds remaining he lobbed the ball high into the square when he could easily have popped over the equalising point.

“I thought we were losing by two points so when I turned my man I just hit a high ball in to the square. If I had known I could have easily scored a point. I could see the scoreboard and it clearly said we were down by two points but we were only down by one. The scoreboard was wrong,” said a disgruntled Dean.

Wicklow PRO Jackie Napier says that this isn’t the first time that this has happened and he explains that when the sun shines strong on the scoreboard it stops working.

“When this all started I suggested that we move the scoreboard to the opposite end of the field but I was told it would cost too much to bring the electricity. But when we were up in Slaughtneil in Derry with the hurlers they had an electronic scoreboard on a lorry so they could bring it where they wanted. This is not the first time that this has happened. It happened at a big match before and it’s been going on for about five years now. It should be relocated no matter what it costs,” he added.

Wicklow haven’t scored 70 points in a match since! The scoreboard was subsequently moved to the opposite end of the ground and is now fully functional on sunny match days…
